UV-C LED Disinfection in Childcare Facilities

A pilot study in childcare facilities tested whether UV-C LED disinfection can cut the microbial load that conventional cleaning leaves behind, without chemicals. Lumitech’s automated, ceiling-mounted UV-C LED disinfector, combined with standard cleaning, reduced germs by 87 % overnight and kept the risk of infection lower throughout the day. The study concludes that UV-C LED disinfection is a proven, safe and highly effective contribution to environmental hygiene, especially in high-traffic rooms.

This episode details a pilot study on the effectiveness of UV-C LED technology for disinfection in childcare facilities, aiming to significantly reduce the microbial load without chemicals. Traditional cleaning often leaves a high residual germ load, which calls for additional measures.

Lumitech’s automated UV-C LED disinfector, a ceiling-mounted device, was tested. Combined with standard cleaning it achieved an 87 % reduction in germs overnight, leading to a generally lower risk of infection throughout the day. The study concludes that UV-C LED disinfection offers a proven, safe and highly effective contribution to environmental hygiene, especially in high-traffic environments.

LUMITECH, an LED innovation leader, develops and manufactures state-of-the-art UV-C LED technology (COB as well as SMT) in Austria, with best-in-class UV-C efficiency combined with specific optics, well-considered thermal management and optimised layout and connection technology for UV — such as the UV-C room disinfector used in the field study, which operates autonomously while guaranteeing intrinsically safe operation: an upper-room germicidal system in a familiar design for surface mounting on the ceiling, similar to a smoke detector. https://lumitech.at

Far-UVC LEDs transmit data at record speed | Ferdinand-Braun-Institut

Researchers at Ferdinand-Braun-Institut (FBH), the University of Strathclyde, and the University of Cambridge demonstrated wireless optical communication using far-UVC LEDs at wavelengths below 235 nm, achieving data rates up to 1.5 gigabits per second over a 30 cm line-of-sight link. The FBH-developed LEDs are optimized for high optical power and fast modulation by segmenting the emitting surface to reduce capacitance and increase current density. Far-UVC offers low solar background outdoors and stronger Rayleigh scattering for potential non-line-of-sight links. Next steps include testing longer distances, non-line-of-sight performance, and environmental effects on transmission.
