This portfolio consists of:
1. US patent # 8070324 which covers the basic idea of using thermistor array with negative temperature coefficient (NTC thermistor array) for the sensing of temperature LED engine (LED array or COB) as well as current controlling directly in the power line of the fan integrated with heat sink thermally coupled in turn with PCB of LED engine.
2. Canada patent # 2770394; Germany Patent Application # 11 2009 001839; Japan Patent Application # 2011-520291 which covered same concept in the countries accordingly.
3. Continued Patent Applications 13/544,798 on July 2012 and 13/741,055 on January 2013 which covered additional claims and expanded the protection of the novelty relatively to basic Patent # 8070324.

This Patent portfolio covers the main possible configurations of ACS which could be used in the design of LED fixtures for appropriate thermal management of LED light engine. Depending on placement of NTC thermistor array in the general structure of LED fixture at least three versions (a, b, c) of configuration of ACS may be considered in details (from left to right):

(a) NTC array is integrated with heat sink and fan – real (ACM) which could be used with various LED light engines (which can be replaced easy) as thermo loads accordingly to cooling power range of ACM (more completed configuration).
(b) NTC array is integrated directly with LED’s PCB as element of LED fixture (more compact configuration).
(c) NTC array is performed as micro module (or IC even) which could be attached mechanically into LED fixture in some appropriate place (more flexible and universal configuration).

MP Lighting believes strongly in this concept of ACS because it allows manufacturing very simple, reliable and economical cooling system. May be it is simplest in the world control loop with electrical negative feedback because just one item (as NTC thermistor array) in the BOM is used as electronic component. This simplicity is very relevant to LED lighting applications but also could be used in other areas for appropriate thermal management.

About MP Lighting:
MP Lighting was founded in 1994 and is a Canadian based, owned, and operated company with its headquarters in Vancouver Canada. The company started with the design of two ceiling mount fixtures and one of the very first Cable Systems in Canada. The demand for this unique style of lighting was so popular that the line eventually expanded to include a Single and Double Rail system that could be curved to different radiuses. It was at this time that the company really started to evolve. Today MP Lighting specializes in the manufacturing of architectural LED fixtures as well as low voltage, line voltage and 3 Circuit track systems for commercial and residential applications. MP Lighting employs about 70 personnel at its 45,000 sq/ft Vancouver facility and markets its products to engineers, architects and interior designers throughout every major city in North America. The key to MP Lighting's strength and success can be attributed to both the in house design team, that continuously designs innovative, unique and architecturally pleasing products and the employees that produce and market these quality products.

The new edition of IEC 60598-2-24:2026 has been officially published. It specifies essential safety requirements for luminaires intended for use where combustible dust or flammable materials are present, necessitating strict control of enclosure surface temperatures to prevent fire or ignition. The revision aligns test methods and construction requirements with recent developments in industrial and specialist lighting and with the latest edition of the general standard CEI EN 60598-1:2024. Publication of the EN and subsequent CEI standard will follow as formal steps, after unanimous positive votes. ASSIL members can contact the Technical Area for clarification.
