DLC Released Updated Networked Lighting Controls Technical Requirements

Taking effect August 3, NLC V5.2 reflects feedback received from DLC members and lighting industry stakeholders during a public comment period that followed release of the first draft of the policy in March.

“The final technical requirements include provisions that will expand the benefits of connected lighting, including support for improved interoperability, standardized system configuration, and recognition of emerging capabilities such as thermostat-enabled HVAC integration,” DLC Executive Director and CEO Tina Halfpenny said. “The NLC V5.2 revision cycle also included an effort to make our Qualified Products List easier to use for energy efficiency programs, manufacturers, building owners and project specifiers.”

NLC V5.2’s key themes include:

  • Expanding recognition of integrated building technologies, particularly the decarbonization strategy of lighting-to-HVAC integration via thermostats;
  • Facilitating verification of ongoing energy savings through system configuration reporting aligned with industry standards (specifically, American National Standards Institute (ANSI)/National Electric Manufacturers Association (NEMA) Standard C137.9);
  • Improving usability and clarity of the DLC’s NLC QPL; and
  • Expanding opportunities for additional market segments to participate in the NLC program, particularly horticultural lighting.

The DLC will host two webinars to provide more information on NLC V5.2. The NLC V5.2 Final Release Webinar highlighting key details of the technical requirements will take place on July 8 at 3 PM ET – register here. A second webinar at 1 PM ET on Aug. 3, NLC V5.2 Application Guidance, will focus on implementation of the new policy – register here.

About the DesignLights Consortium: As an independent nonprofit organization, the DesignLights Consortium (an initiative of Efficiency Forward, Inc.) provides decision makers with data and resources on quality lighting, controls and integrated building systems to reduce energy use, carbon emissions and light pollution. We envision a net zero future where lighting, controls and integrated building systems enable energy savings, decarbonization and sustainability for all people and the environment.

UK now allows approved LED replacement bulbs in MOT tests

From 14 October 2026, MOT testers must accept ECE approved LED replacement (LEDr) bulbs fitted in compatible halogen headlamp units on class 3, 4, 5 and 7 vehicles. The change does not apply to class 1 and 2 motorcycles, halogen units converted for HID bulbs, or full LED headlamp unit replacements. Approved LEDr products must carry a permanent, secure approval sticker on the vehicle visible during the MOT. Testers need only check the presence and condition of this sticker and must fail the headlamp where the sticker is missing, unreadable, appears tampered with, or does not match the fitted bulb.

IEC 60598-2-24:2026 published — updated requirements for limited-surface-temperature luminaires

The new edition of IEC 60598-2-24:2026 has been officially published. It specifies essential safety requirements for luminaires intended for use where combustible dust or flammable materials are present, necessitating strict control of enclosure surface temperatures to prevent fire or ignition. The revision aligns test methods and construction requirements with recent developments in industrial and specialist lighting and with the latest edition of the general standard CEI EN 60598-1:2024. Publication of the EN and subsequent CEI standard will follow as formal steps, after unanimous positive votes. ASSIL members can contact the Technical Area for clarification.
