BRIDGELUX Boost Efficiency Record for GaN-on-Silicon Technology LEDs to 160lm/W Bridgelux Inc., a leading developer and manufacturer of LED lighting technologies and solutions, has shattered its previous industry record for highest Lumen per Watt values for Gallium Nitride on Silicon (GaN-on-Si). Using its proprietary buffer layer technology, the company has demonstrated growth of crack-free GaN layers on 8-inch silicon wafers, without bowing at room temperature, extending the company’s lead in driving the performance and manufacturability of GaN LEDs on silicon substrate. Independent Research using Xicato Spot Modules: Link Between Light Quality and the Attraction of Retail Displays There is a strong link between the quality of accent light sources, in terms of color rendering ability and in particular the rendering of deep reds, and the attention-grabbing potential of retail displays, according to the outcome of an on-site evaluation by end-users and lighting designers conducted by independent researcher, Colette Knight and peer reviewed by University College London. Shoppers and lighting designers took part in the experiment carried out in a House of Fraser store in London. It showed that there was no statistical difference between the appreciation of colors rendered with halogen or Ra 95 (R9 >95) LED sources, whereas the rating was lower for Ra 80 (R9<20) LED sources. This translated directly into the rating of the display itself in terms of its attraction. Read more »

Studies Published on Flicker Perception from SSL Systems - ASSIST to Release Related Recommendation Flicker and stroboscopic effects have been a concern with solid-state lighting (SSL), and industry and the ENERGY STAR program have debated recently the effects of frequency and other driving modes on the perception and acceptability of flicker. To provide further data and guidance in this area, the Lighting Research Center (LRC) at Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute has conducted human factors studies of flicker that were recently published in the Lighting Research and Technology journal. The studies, funded by the Alliance for Solid-State Illumination Systems and Technologies (ASSIST), will become the basis for future ASSIST recommends guidelines on flicker from SSL systems. Researcher from the University of Miami Helps Create a Smaller, Flexible LED
University of Miami professor at the College of Engineering, Jizhou Song, has helped design an light-emitting diode (LED) light that uses an array of LEDs 100 times smaller than conventional LEDs. The new device has flexibility, maintains lower temperature and has an increased life-span over existing LEDs. From the OSRAM Laboratory: Efficiency Record for Warm White OSRAM Opto Semiconductors has set a new laboratory record of 142 lm/W for the efficiency of a warm white LED light source. With a correlated color temperature (CCT) of 2755 K the LED achieves a good color rendering index (CRI) of 81. Using Nanostructures to Improve LED Light Emission Application of nanosphere lithography to create uniform surface roughness on an optical device sample promotes light extraction and collection efficiency. In recent years, nanopattern definition has become a subject of extensive exploration owing to its ability to improve device performance in electronics and optoelectronics. The literature proposes a variety of techniques, including electron-beam lithography, which gives uniform nanopatterns but is expensive, and self-assembled metal nanomasks, which scatter nonuniformly on the sample. As an alternative, we have developed a technology called nanosphere lithography that creates nanopatterns by spin-coating a monolayer of nanospheres on top of the device surface. We have used the technology to fabricate nanopatterns on gallium nitride (GaN)-based LEDs to improve light extraction and collection efficiency. Read more »
