Electrolube Provides Innovative Resin Solution for LED Lens Issue

Electrolube, the global manufacturer of electro-chemicals, has provided an innovative solution for a complex LED assembly issue. The customer, a leading manufacturer of street lighting and high-bay luminaires in India, had been experiencing problems with the attachment of individual lenses to the elements of multiple LED arrays. The function of these lenses is to scatter or focus light from the arrays, as required, and while some of them are held in position by fasteners, most are secured in place with a locking mechanism. The locking mechanism is perfectly adequate when the luminaire is placed in situ but it tends to loosen during transportation, leading to the lenses becoming detached and causing damage to the array. Awareness of the ecological impact of technologies is becoming more important since climate change due to industrialization cannot be denied. LED lighting is one of the technologies that is deemed as a contributor in helping to reduce the impact caused by wasted energy. Unfortunately, light pollution, due to inefficient energy usage, is not the only problem. Besides the more recognized pollution from pesticides and chemical pollutants, light pollution also disturbs ecology and wildlife. Dr. Grubisic, Researcher at the Free University Berlin & Leibniz-Institute, has been working on this problem for more than five years now. She has written an article, also in this issue, concerning this. At the LED professional Symposium she was also good enough to grant this interview, providing some background information, explaining why light pollution is such an issue in biology and why this topic should be of concern to all of us. Lumileds Boosts Efficiency and Cost Effectiveness of Luxeon 2835E for Retrofit Lamps & Downlights

Lumileds introduced a new version of the Luxeon 2835E 9V LED specifically optimized for the typical drive current of retrofit lamps and downlights, 100 mA. Lamp designers will achieve a 5% boost in efficacy over the 60 mA LED when driven at the same current, leading to more efficient retrofit lamps including A19, PAR and B11 lamps. Forward voltage drops by 4% as well. For instance, at 2700K and 80 CRI, the Luxeon 2835E 9V produces 118 lm and achieves 127 lm/W at 9.3V (versus 120 lm/W at 9.7 V). Read more »
