A New LED Controller Technology to Expedite the Next Level of Smart Lighting
Lighting installations that use artificial lighting and often deemed more comfortable and energy efficient are generally referred to as "Smart Lighting". While no clear definition exists "Smart Lighting" has become a common catch phrase. Kurt Marquardt, Senior Director LED Lighting Systems and Product Marketing, Infineon Technologies has a more accurate definition. For him, the term "smart lighting" describes the capability of the lighting system to adapt automatically to the needs of the users and the room. He presents an alternative way to implement smart lighting systems, using the new XDPL8221 digital LED-driver IC [1].

Temperature Profiling of Secondary LED Optics by Infrared Thermography
Over the last few years, the power density of white LEDs has increased dramatically. Whilst there are large efforts to optimize the thermal management and thus the temperature stability of the LEDs, less attention is paid to the temperature of the secondary optic. Peter W. Nolte, Franziska Steudel, Bernd Ahrens, Nils J. Ziegeler, Frank Drees, Horst Rudolph, and Stefan Schweizer from the Fraunhofer Application Center for Inorganic Phosphors, the South Westphalia University of Applied Sciences, and the Innovations-and Technologycenter GmbH, TRILUX Group respectively, have approached this issue. They investigated the temperature profiles of polymethyl methacrylate (PMMA) and polycarbonate (PC) secondary optics and they discuss the results.

Delta Launches New EUCO Arena Sport Series LED Drivers for Reliable, Efficient Arena and Outdoor Lighting
Delta, a global leader in power and thermal management solutions, today announced the launch of EUCO Arena Sport Series LED drivers, which are designed to provide luminaire manufacturer's a versatile solution for many industrial and commercial lighting applications such as high mast lighting, recreational sports lighting, harbors, airports, and parking lot lighting. Built on three independent output channels with a maximum power of 500 W (1500 W total), these drivers have a wide operating temperature range that ensures performance and reliability for the most rugged applications. These drivers offer precise tuning of the drive current and are equipped with dimming circuitry for DALI-2 digital dimming to allow for adjustment of lighting levels from 0.1% to 100%. In addition to the driver architecture and circuit topology, Delta has achieved a very low typical current ripple of ≤1% peak-to-peak. That is important when it comes to televised events, since current ripple can cause LED flicker. Flickering lights affect the quality of sports broadcasts and limit slow motion options.

ALLOS and KAUST Are Working on High Efficiency Nitride-Based Red LEDs on Si
ALLOS Semiconductors has engaged in a collaboration with Prof. Ohkawa and his team at King Abdullah University of Science and Technology (KAUST) for realizing high efficiency nitride-based red LEDs on large diameter silicon substrates. In the collaboration the teams are addressing fundamental issues like the large lattice mismatch and the quantum-confined Stark effect (QCSE) which are preventing the adoption of red nitride-based LEDs for practical industry usage. In particular, for the emerging field of micro LED displays there is a strong demand to enable red LEDs on large diameter wafers in addition to the established blue and green color LEDs in the nitride system in order to reduce manufacturing complexity and cost.
