Lighting Research Center Issues Response to AMA Report on LED Lighting
Recently the American Medical Association (AMA) has produced a document cautioning the public about In-Ga-N based LEDs used as sources of illumination. The Lighting Research Center (LRC) at Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute has received a large number of requests for an opinion. Professors Mark Rea and Mariana Figueiro of the LRC have prepared a response.

DoE Releases OLED Market Report for 2016
The latest DoE market report for OLEDs sounds much more modest than some older market reports when DoE concludes in the management summary: With rapid advances in these areas, this technology could become the complementary solid-state counterpart to LEDs, a dynamic and softly luminous luminaire element and building material. On the positive side, DoE states that while OLEDs are struggling through a similar set of difficulties like LEDs did in the early years, OLED manufacturers have the advantage of having watched and learned from the LED industry’s working through these problems.

Lighting-for-Seniors Study Hints that “Tunable” White LED Light Has Positive Effects
Disturbed sleep patterns are common among the residents of senior-care facilities, due to the aging process and diseases like Alzheimer’s. Could lighting make a difference? That’s the question that the Sacramento Municipal Utility District (SMUD); the ACC Care Center, also in Sacramento; and the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) decided to answer, at least on a preliminary basis, by replacing some of the Care Center’s fluorescent lighting in one corridor, two resident rooms (including bathrooms), the nurse station, the common family room, and the administrator’s office.

National Lighting Bureau: AMA Lighting Recommendations are Based on Wrong Metric
The American Medical Association’s (AMA’s) warnings about too much “blue light” at night are seriously flawed: The AMA developed them using a measuring tool that does not measure the specific kind of “blue light” the AMA is concerned about. Nonetheless, according to speakers at the National Lighting Bureau’s Annual Lighting Forum, some jurisdictions and public-transportation departments nationwide believe, mistakenly, that they will reduce human-health risks by adopting the AMA’s recommendations. Making matters worse, when applied to street and roadway lighting, the AMA recommendations could erode public safety by diminishing driver and pedestrian visibility, while also reducing energy efficiency or increasing energy costs.

Energy Requirements for Lighting Systems Lead to Enormous Energy Savings and Improved Quality of Light
Based on results from the Ecodesign Preparatory Study on Lighting Systems (ENER Lot 37), the Directorate-General on Energy will possibly present in the upcoming months specific policy proposals that will very positively influence the lighting system design for buildings and roads. If implemented, the EU-28 total annual electricity saving potential of 48-56 TWh/year in 2050 will exceed the saving potential of the existing EcoDesign Directive 245/2009 on lighting products in the tertiary sector.

New LRC Study Tests the Impact of Circadian Light on Alertness in Office Workers
In 2017 the Lighting Research Center (LRC) at Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute published a groundbreaking study showing that office workers who receive a robust dose of circadian-effective light experience better sleep, and lower levels of depression and stress, than those who spend their days in dim or low light levels. The team of LRC researchers, led by Dr. Mariana Figueiro and sponsored by the U.S. General Services Administration, measured existing light levels for 109 participants at five federal office buildings designed to maximize daylight availability indoors. The research team found that even in open offices with many, large windows, office workers were not receiving enough light to stimulate their circadian system during the day, due to factors such as season, cloud cover, desk orientation, and window shade position.
