DOE Announces Selections for SSL Manufacturing R&D (Round 3) Funding Opportunity
The U.S. Department of Energy has announced the competitive selection of three projects for solid-state lighting (SSL), in response to the SSL Manufacturing R&D funding opportunity announcement (FOA) DE-FOA-0000561. The two-year projects will focus on achieving significant cost reductions while maintaining quality by improving manufacturing equipment, processes, or monitoring techniques. Total DOE funding for the three projects is $7.1 million and leverages an additional $5 million in private-sector funding from the three companies.

Lighting Research Center Authors National Academies Report on New Roadway Lighting Technologies
The rapid development of lighting technologies, particularly solid-state systems using light emitting diodes (LEDs), has opened a universe of new possibilities as well as new questions about roadway lighting in the U.S., which for decades has been dominated by the use of high pressure sodium (HPS) lamps. Other light source technologies have also been angling for roadway market share. There is a critical need for objective technical information about new types of roadway lighting among transportation agencies. In response, the Transportation Research Board (TRB), part of the National Academies, initiated a project to evaluate new lighting technologies and identify new metrics for comparison. Lighting Research Center (LRC) scientists John Bullough, who served as principal investigator, and Leora Radetsky co-authored the report, entitled "Analysis of New Highway Lighting Technologies." The LRC is part of Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute, the nation’s oldest technological research university.

DOE Publishes CALiPER Snapshot Report on Indoor LED Luminaires
The U.S. Department of Energy's CALiPER program has released a Snapshot Report on indoor LED luminaires, which utilizes the LED Lighting Facts® program's extensive product database to help industry stakeholders understand the current state and trajectory of the market for that class of products. Based on data through the first quarter of 2014, the report focuses on five types of indoor luminaires: downlights, industrial ambient luminaires (e.g., high-bay and low-bay), track heads, troffers (e.g., 2×4, 2×2, 1×4), and linear fixtures (e.g., linear pendants, strip lights). Together, these five product types represent the bulk of all indoor luminaires listed by LED Lighting Facts, and about one-third of the total products listed.

DoE: Solid-State Lighting R&D Plan
The solid-state lighting (SSL) revolution signals a profound shift in how we will use and consider lighting and represents a huge opportunity to generate significant energy savings. The energy being used for lighting represents a significant portion of global energy use. Rising electricity prices, mounting concerns about climate change, and desire for energy independence are causing the global lighting market to shift toward more energy-efficient light sources.
