DOE Releases Life-Cycle Energy Consumption Report - Incandescence vs. Fluorescent vs. LED Lamps
The U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) has published a report comparing the energy consumed over the entire life cycle for LED lamps, compact fluorescent lamps (CFLs), and incandescent lamps. Entitled "Review of the Life-Cycle Energy Consumption of Incandescent, Compact Fluorescent, and LED Lamps", it is based on existing life-cycle assessment literature of lighting products.

DOE Report Characterizes 2010 US Lighting Market
The U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) has released a report detailing the characteristics of the U.S. lighting market by technology and sector, which helps chart progress made toward the goal of transitioning to more efficient white-light source technologies. The 2010 U.S. Lighting Market Characterization provides comprehensive and detailed estimates of the national inventory of installed lamps as well as their performance characteristics, associated energy use, and lumen production. It focuses on four sectors: residential buildings, commercial buildings, industrial buildings, and outdoor.

DOE Releases Consortium Report on LED Street Lights
The U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) has published the final report from a demonstration of LED technology in ornamental post-top street lights, conducted in Sacramento, CA. This report provides an overview of the evaluation of four different LED replacement products using computer simulations, field measurements, and laboratory testing. The evaluation was conducted by DOE’s Municipal Solid-State Street Lighting Consortium in collaboration with the Sacramento Municipal Utility District and the City of Sacramento, with additional support from City consultant Mary Matteson Bryan.

DOE Publishes Updated Recommendations for Testing and Reporting LED Luminaire Lifetime
The U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) has published an updated version of the guide LED Luminaire Lifetime: Recommendations for Testing and Reporting, the latest edition in a series of publications on LED product performance and lifetime. The guide was developed by a working group under the auspices of DOE and the Next Generation Lighting Industry Alliance, composed of a diverse group of experts in reliability, lighting, and LED technology. Their recommendations are an important step toward consistent, industry-wide understanding of LED luminaire lifetime, and will assist standards organizations in their work.

DOE Publishes Updated SSL R&D Plan

UCI Researchers Find LED Products Billed as Eco-Friendly Contain Toxic Metals
LED products usually are electronic products that should be handled as electronics scrap if disposed, anyway. A realease of potentially hazardous substances under regular use is very unlikely, even when broken. LED professional does not agree with the generalized conclusions of this research. However, it is important to challange statements of PR and lobbies to boost more eco-friendly products. In fact, light-emitting diodes of tested holiday bulbs, traffic lights and car beams marketed as safe, environmentally preferable alternatives to traditional lightbulbs actually contain lead, arsenic and a dozen other potentially hazardous substances, according to newly published research.

DOE selects Sandia National Laboratory Center for Solid-State Lighting research and development
U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) Secretary Samuel W. Bodman announced today that Sandia National Laboratories is the new home of the National Laboratory Center for Solid-State Lighting Research and Development. He made the announcement at a news conference at Sandia's International Programs Building.

U.S. Department of Energy publishes final report on SSL efficacy for todays products
DoE SSL luminaries test shows a huge discrepancy between manufacturer claims and actual tested luminaire performance. Numerous products for differnt applications were tested in three rounds. To give consideration to real-life conditions off state power consumption (standby power) was taken into account. Pilot test results were published in December 2006, first round results followed in March 2007. Now Final results are published for free distribution in the public interest for noncommercial, educational purposes.

The DOE Commercially Available LED Product Evaluation and Reporting (CALiPER) Program, formerly called the Commercial Product Testing Program, supports testing of a wide, representative array of SSL products available for general illumination. DOE Releases Report on FAA Demonstration of LED Walkway Lighting
The U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) has published the final report from the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) demonstration of LED walkway lighting. This report, prepared by Pacific Northwest National Laboratory, provides an overview of project results which include energy savings of more than 25% over existing lighting, improved illuminance uniformity, and positive user feedback.

DOE Releases Report on FAA Demonstration of LED Walkway Lighting
The U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) recently released a September 2008 report, Energy Savings Estimates of Light Emitting Diodes in Niche Lighting Applications. Today DOE published an Errata to the report regarding the refrigerated display case energy savings estimates. Specifically, the installed base of refrigerated display case fluorescent lighting systems in the U.S. was given in linear feet of display cases instead of, as labeled in the September report, the number of refrigerated display cases. This correction impacts calculations throughout the report.

DOE Report on Residential LED Lighting Shows Advantage over Conventional Lighting
In August 2008 the Pacific Northwest National Laboratory (PNNL) conducted a light-emitting diode (LED) residential lighting demonstration project for the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE), Office of Building Technologies, as part of DOE’s Solid-State Lighting (SSL) Technology Demonstration GATEWAY Program. Two lighting technologies, an LED replacement for lamps (bulbs) in downlights and an LED undercabinet lighting fixture, were evaluated in the demonstration which was conducted in two homes built for the 2008 Tour of Homes in Eugene, Oregon. The homes were built by the Lane County Home Builders Association (HBA) and Future B Homes. The Energy Trust of Oregon (ETO) also participated in the demonstration project.

DOE Report on LED Area Lights for a Commercial Garage Shows Good Acceptance
This U.S. Department of Energy GATEWAY Demonstration project studied the applicability of light-emitting diode (LED) luminaires for commercial parking garage applications. High-pressure sodium (HPS) area luminaires were replaced with new LED area luminaires. The project was supported under the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) Solid-State Lighting Program. Other participants in the demonstration project included Providence Portland Medical Center in Portland, Oregon, the Energy Trust of Oregon, and Lighting Sciences Group (LSG) Inc. Pacific Northwest National Laboratory (PNNL) conducted the measurements and analysis of the results. PNNL manages GATEWAY demonstrations for DOE and represents their perspective in the conduct of the work.

DoE Released New CALiPER Program Results: Round 7 of Product Testing
DoE released CALiPER Program round 7 results. The testing focused on three application areas: outdoor lighting, downlights, and replacement lamps. One series of tests included eight streetlights. The series of tests on nine downlights included a wide range of luminaires that could potentially be used for downlighting. The replacement lamp category included nine different SSL products, including: MR16s, some larger directional lamps (PAR20, PAR30, and PAR38), and A-lamps.
