Soitec and Silian Enter Joint Development Agreement of GaN Wafers with Novel Epitaxy Approach to Increase Productivity of LED Manufacturing
Soitec (Euronext), a world leader in generating and manufacturing revolutionary semiconductor materials for the electronics and energy industries, and Chongqing Silian Optoelectronics Science & Technology Co., Ltd. (Silian), an established supplier of materials, devices and systems for the lighting industry, have partnered to jointly develop gallium nitride (GaN) template wafers using hydride vapor phase epitaxy (HVPE). The resulting GaN template wafers present breakthrough cost savings in manufacturing LEDs.

Marl Doubles LED Output in the UK with New Assembly Line
Marl International has invested £150,000 to double its manufacturing output at its site in Ulverston Cumbria, putting it in a prime position to benefit from the rapid growth of an emerging ‘green’ lighting technology. The line has been specially modified to handle PCB boards of up to 600mm long, much more than the standard length. Such boards are commonly required to replace conventional lighting products. The announcement brings the investment made by Marl in its UK manufacturing facility to £270,000 altogether.

The U.S. Department of Energy has announced the competitive selection of three projects for solid-state lighting (SSL), in response to the SSL Manufacturing R&D funding opportunity announcement (FOA) DE-FOA-0000561. Osram Expands with New LED Assembly Plant in China
Osram AG has signed a contract with the Wuxi New District Administrative Commit-tee to build a new assembly plant in the Chinese province of Jiangsu. LED chips will be packaged in housings at the new backend facility starting in late 2013; with the Regensburg and Penang (frontend) plants exclusively continuing to make the actual LED chips. "The new assembly plant will improve our access to the world's largest single market in the lighting industry," said Aldo Kamper, CEO of the Osram Opto Semiconductors business unit. "As one of the world’s most renowned LED lighting corporations, Osram's new plant in Wuxi will definitely enhance the development of the LED industry in both Wuxi Municipality and Jiangsu Province," said Lixin Huang, Member of the Standing Committee of Jiangsu Provincial CPC Committee and Secretary of Wuxi Municipal CPC Committee in China.
