Switching Over While Getting Equipped for the Future
Starting recently, the new-build Rohrdorf area of the Pielenhofen community near Regensburg is shining in a modern light: the plan is for nine street lights with LED technology from OSRAM Opto Semiconductors to shed their light on the future development. And that’s only the beginning – in stages, Pielenhofen will switch over its street lighting to LED across the community’s whole area. It is a measure that not only pays off for large cities: small communities can also achieve huge savings as a result, also making a contribution to sustainability.

GE Lighting Helps School Campus Reduce Energy Costs by More Than $200,000 Annually
Cuyahoga Valley Career Center (CVCC) recently called on GE Lighting, in conjunction with CCG Energy Solutions, to create a lighting equation that would result in better quality light and lower energy and life-cycle maintenance costs. Part of a $2.6 million comprehensive energy project, the school’s campus underwent a lighting upgrade that included state-of-the-art outdoor GE Evolve™ LED Area Lights, rooftop daylighting panels with automatic dimming, and new high-efficiency fluorescent fixtures utilizing UltraMax® ballasts and Watt-Miser® extended life lamps throughout the building. In addition to the lighting improvements, mechanical upgrades with HVAC controls and a new building automation system were implemented to provide savings of more than $200,000 annually.

Arraiolos, Portugal: 50% of Energy Savings Thanks to LED Technology by Osram OS
As of late, the streets in the historic centre of Arraiolos in Portugal have been lit up entirely by energy-efficient lighting diode technology (LED), used in combination with an intelligent lighting management system. This project, the first of its kind in the entire country, was realised by Schréder, a manufacturing company for street lighting, in cooperation with OSRAM Opto Semiconductors. In future, the new street lighting shall ensure energy savings of approximately 50 percent.

Asheville Boasts First Large-Scale LED Street Light Deployment in North Carolina
Taking steps to improve energy efficiency and reduce its overall carbon footprint, the City of Asheville has initiated North Carolina’s first large-scale deployment of LED street lights. There are 3,643 LEDway® street lights from Durham-based manufacturer Cree, Inc. (Nasdaq: CREE) being installed, with projected savings of $260,000 annually.

SPAR Opens First LED-only Lighting Supermarkets in Vienna and Murau
With its new shop concept, SPAR Austria has set an example: almost at the same time, SPAR’s first climate-protection supermarkets were opened in Murau and on Vienna’s Engerthstrasse, featuring a lighting solution by Zumtobel that is completely based on LEDs. For these supermarkets, Zumtobel had developed a uniform lighting concept based on LED luminaires only: general lighting in the two supermarkets is ensured by the Tecton LED continuous-row lighting system, which was presented for the first time at Light+Building 2010. The LED version of this tried-and-tested product by Zumtobel offers high lighting quality combined with efficient light sources that are nearly maintenance-free. Even the shelves, the side rooms and the outdoor areas are illuminated by LED products only. In combination with other innovative structural measures, the branches will save 50% of energy and up to 80 t of CO2.
