ON Semiconductor: RGB LED Pixel Drivers for High-Brightness, High-Visual Impact Architectural Lighting

ON Semiconductor (Nasdaq: ONNN) has expanded its line of constant-current, LDD™ (low dropout driver) products recently acquired from Catalyst Semiconductor, to include two new high-brightness RGB LED pixel drivers. The CAT4103 and CAT4109 are three-channel, linear-based constant-current LED drivers for RGB LED pixel control in emerging high-brightness, high-visual impact LED architectural lighting.

The CAT4103 is designed for high-end, multi-color, “intelligent” LED architectural lighting applications. It features a high-speed serial interface, which can support data rates up to 25 megahertz (MHz) and offers fully buffered data outputs to ensure the highest data integrity is maintained over distributed (long distance), daisy-chained lighting systems.

The CAT4109 uses a parallel interface with each channel having a dedicated PWM control, making it ideal for the more conventional LED visual effects applications, such as color-mixing and accent architectural lighting.

Both the CAT4103 and CAT4109 support a wide range of LED constant current drive of up to 175 milliamp (mA) on each channel, with dropout levels down to 0.3 volt (V) (at 60 mA). This ensures maximum performance in driving long strings of LEDs. With voltage compliance levels of 25 V on each channel, these drivers are capable of supporting RGB pixels with brightness power levels in excess of 10 watts.

Features:
• Three independent constant-current sinks rated to 25 V, set by external resistors
• Wide LED current range to 175 mA per channel
• Buffered output to ensure data integrity for distributed lighting systems (CAT4103)
• High-speed, 25 MHz four-wire serial interface (CAT4103)
• Individual PWM control for each channel (CAT4109)
• Ultra-low dropout current drivers
• Packaging: 16-lead SOIC, 150 mil

Price and Availability:
Pricing for the CAT4103 constant-current, low dropout driver is $0.65 USD per unit in 10,000 piece quantities. The CAT4109 is priced at $0.62 USD per unit in 10,000 piece quantities. Samples are available now. Projected lead-time for production quantities is currently 6 to 8 weeks ARO.
